NIH SUPPORTS GENESIS USE AND DEVELOPMENT

We have just received a 4 year grant from the NIH to fund the support, maintenance and further development of GENESIS. This will allow us to continue and increase our support of GENESIS through BABEL, hire the programming staff to issue more frequent bug fixes and updates to the GENESIS distribution, develop new GENESIS-based tutorials and documentation, hold an annual GENESIS Users Group meeting, and continue development of GENESIS as a tool for the construction of realistic models. Here is additional information on each aspect of this project, taken from the research plan given in the NIH proposal.

The last of these objectives ( "Development of a new graphical interface") will result in GENESIS 3. This will be a faster, easier-to-use, backwards-compatible, reimplementation of GENESIS with a modern Java-based user interface. The non-graphical part of GENESIS will be based on the Messaging Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE).

Here is a summary of the presentation on plans for GENESIS 3 development, given at the WAMM-BAMM 2005 workshop on XML for Model Specification.

If you would like to comment on our plans, we invite you to send comments to us at genesis@genesis-sim.org, or to initiate a discussion via the BABEL mailing list.
